This Is Not That

Step 1: Introduce the first object by handling it naturally.

Invite participants to identify:

  • What is it?
  • What is it normally used for?

Step 2: Introduce the challenge: “Now let’s pretend this object isn’t what we think it is.” Demonstrate by inventing a completely different purpose for the object while physically interacting with it.

Example: “A wooden spoon becomes a conductor’s baton.”

Step 3: Take turns and pass the object around the circle. Each participant imagines a completely different identity or purpose for the object.

Step 4: Repeat the activity using the second object. As confidence grows, encourage participants to become more imaginative.

Step 5: Reflection

Ask participants:

  • Which object surprised you the most?
  • Was it easier or harder than you expected?
  • What helped you think differently?
  • Did someone else’s idea inspire your own?
